In Memorial
Dorothea E. Orem passed away on June 22, 2007 in her home in Savannah, GA, USA. Dorothea died shortly before her 93rd birthday.
The discipline of nursing has lost one of the greatest nursing theorists.
Those of us who used to work with her in work groups or met with her in her home in Savannah have lost a friend and mentor.
Violeta A. Berbiglia, EdD, MSN, RN, Educational ConsultantI had the pleasure of meeting Dorothea, for the first time, in 1988. My first impression was a lasting impression. She has forever been a stabilizing factor in my career. Her gentle, caring, practical, scientific approach to the practice of nursing inspired me to explore her theory in my teaching, research, and practice. I owe my professional growth to the application of the SCDNT. I treasure the opportunity I had to learn from Dorothea and her close colleages.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dorothea in November 2002 in her home in Savannah. When I remember the meeting, it brightens my day. Beautiful memories are wonderful things, they never wear out, they never get lost, and can never be given away. Dorothea's work published in "Nursing: Concepts of Practise" has made it possible for me to develop a curriculum for paediatric nursing education in Germany. I am very grateful to her and appreciate the utilization of the SCDNT. God has her in His keeping, I have her in my mind and her work is my keepsake.
